Keep Your Child Safe While Using Teething Rings

October 30, 2023

It’s very exciting when a baby’s first teeth start to erupt through her (or his) gum line, which happens between the ages of 4 and 7 months. This milestone in a child’s life, however, can cause her (or him) to be irritable and get red, swollen gums. It’s also stressful for her parents. Many moms and dads successfully appease their little ones with teething rings. Though it seems contrary to the symptoms, the pressure from teething rings soothes sore gums.

Happy Campers Pediatric Dentistry is dedicated to pediatric dental health. Our friendly staff takes the time to create a personalized treatment for each patient and offers a wide range of services. Our goal is to make each child’s visit with us extremely pleasant.

Teething rings pose no danger to a child, but they do have “best practices”—ways to ensure that your baby is comfortable and satisfied while using them.

Sterilize teething rings in boiling water for five minutes straight from the packaging. Continue cleaning and sanitizing the rings every few days in a bowl of hot water and mild dishwashing liquid. Without this, you run the risk of passing on germs that could lead to infections.

Cool it! In the fridge? Yes. In the freezer? No! A chilly teething ring adds to its pacifying effects. One that’s too cold has the potential to bruise her delicate gums.

Teething rings come in a variety of materials, from silicone to plastic. Use ones that are made of only firm rubber. Some brands are made of cheap plastics that are easily breakable and could cause her to choke. Other rings are filled with liquid. Your daughter could easily break through the ring and the foreign fluid would flood her mouth. Don’t keep a ring in place by tying it around her neck with ribbon or string. Strangulation or choking could ensure.
